GIS Training
Jenness Enterprises is building a set of online GIS courses drawn from more than a decade of university teaching — Jeff Jenness has taught GIS in the Northern Arizona University School of Forestry's undergraduate, graduate and professional programs since 2012. The online courses adapt that material for working professionals: self-paced modules with lectures, hands-on labs in ArcGIS Pro, and real analytical projects.
What the courses will cover
The flagship course, adapted from Spatial Techniques in Forestry, works through the practical core of professional GIS analysis:
- GIS data types; selections, joins and relates
- Projections and datums — getting coordinates right
- Creating and editing data; basic geoprocessing and automation
- Wildlife topics, including home-range estimation (LoCoH and kernel density)
- Watersheds and basic hydrological analysis, including the topographic wetness index
- The Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS)
- Proximity analysis
- Raster analysis and topography
- Wildland fire analysis
- Topographic roughness
An introductory companion covers GIS fundamentals and the ArcGIS Pro interface, along with symbolization and cartography. Many modules exercise the very tools documented in this Tool Reference, so the courses and this site will cross-link freely.
