Lecture 1: The Joy of GIS
Here we introduce the world of GIS in general, and tantalize you with some of the really cool things you can do. These lectures demonstrate the possibilities of GIS, using Esri's ArcGIS Pro software.

Here we learn that ArcGIS is actually a large family of software packages, and that ArcGIS Pro is just one component. We'll also learn about the ArcGIS License Levels (Basic, Standard and Advanced), Extensions and Add-ons. We'll also briefly discuss a few good alternatives to ArcGIS Pro, including QGIS, GRASS, Manifold, ERDAS Imagine, IDRISI and ENVI.
Here we look at the ArcGIS Pro Interface and learn the basic tools and windows for displaying, analyzing and managing spatial data. We discuss the difference between maps and scenes and we see how they can be added into a layout. We see how to activate a map from within a layout if necessary. We see the Ribbon, discuss context-sensitive tabs, and see how ArcGIS Pro makes use of dockable panes and windows. And we'll see how all the project components are available in the Catalog view, so we can close and reopen maps and layouts from the Catalog.
