Lecture 1: Common Raster Analytical Methods

In this lecture we’ll quickly review what raster data are, then discuss several common ways of analyzing raster data including Reclassification, Zonal Analysis, Neighborhood Analysis and Math with Raster Layers (which is used a lot in remote sensing with satellite- or aircraft-based imagery). This lecture will go over what these methods do conceptually, and then we'll try them out in the lab exercises.

Lecture 2: Surface Analysis; Slope and Aspect

In this lecture we’ll begin our discussion of surface analysis in ArcGIS Pro, discussing slope and aspect, and reviewing several common ways to analyze them. Slope can be problematic when calculated in Percent, and Aspect offers several special challenges because it is a circular variable. We will discuss several ways to properly analyze these topographic variables without making common mistakes. This lecture will go over what these methods do conceptually, and then we'll try them out in the lab exercises.

Lecture 3: Surface Analysis; Insolation, Hillshades and Curvature

In this lecture we’ll continue our discussion of surface analysis in ArcGIS Pro, discussing Solar Insolation, Hillshades and Landscape Curvature, and reviewing several common ways to analyze them. We will discuss how Solar Insolation often captures everything we are hoping for with Aspect, and usually better. We'll discuss how hillshades are often used simply for aesthetic purposes, and go over the Swiss Method for making them even more aesthetically interesting. We will also discuss the various types of curvature offered by the ArcGIS Pro Surface Parameters tool, and how these curvatures differ from the original Curvature tool.

Lecture 4: Common Issues with Raster Analysis

In this lecture we’ll discuss a few issues that we run into occasionally with the ArcGIS Pro raster tools. We’re going to look at issues with geographic rasters, including what happens when we don’t use geodesic methods to analyze them. We’ll look at what a Z-factor is, and when it is appropriate to use. And then we’ll go over some common mistakes people make with neighborhood focal statistics, and wrap up with a quick look at how we can inadvertently make rasters shift position.
